Cutouts

It seems like just another day, just another cutout piece right now. The current negative space style is adored by celebrities. Of course, cutouts began making a comeback on the runway in the spring/summer of 2021, but this year, they’re back and even more daring. Cutouts come in a variety of sizes and shapes, so there is a look for everyone who wants to try the trend, from putting a playful edge on longer, elegant dresses (Proenza Schouler, Giambattista Valli, David Koma, and Christian Siriano) to turning up the fierceness on minis and one-pieces (Christian Siriano, Stella McCartney, and Saint Laurent). Check out our editor’s selections of the top cutaway dresses available this season.

Lime green

If The Grinch were sitting front row during fashion month this season, he would be in heaven. Why? Because lime green was virtually everywhere. The acid color has been incorporated into upscale summer outfits and fancy party dresses by Valentino, Erdem, and Christian Siriano rather than being restricted to Y2K-inspired tributes (see: Versace) (Stella McCartney, Valentino, Prabal Gurung).

Short skirts

We haven’t seen micro-mini skirts on the runway in a while, but we have to confess that we’re kind of here for it. Minis are popular in high-waisted skirt suits (Prabal Gurung, Michael Kors), athleisure-inspired styles (Dior), and out-and-out “fits,” in addition to Miu Miu’s utility style, which has gained popularity due to its nostalgic appeal (Prada, Saint Laurent, Brandon Maxwell).

fiery pink

Yes, highlighter colors will return in 2022 and give your summer clothing a revitalizing zing. How about hot pink if lime green wasn’t your first neon color? Barbie-toned power clothing from head to toe is really popular right now. Look no further for chic coordinated outfits (Dior, Versace) and beach vacation clothing inspiration (David Koma, Prabal Gurung), as well as full-on extra outfits (Bora Aksu, Versace, Giambattista Valli, and Proenza Schouler).

Halternecks

This spring/summer, intricate loops, and criss-cross patterns can be seen everywhere on the runway. Yes, halterneck tops (Rejina Pyo, Christian Siriano, Chanel), dresses (Michael Kors, Valentino, Dior, Tory Burch), and even catsuits (Saint Laurent) are the epitome of “beach vacation” – lol-worthy tan lines be damned.

Low-rise

Recently, the noughties made a call and announced the return of low-rise bottoms. Of course, not everyone (including the members of the present firm) like having a waistline that extends below the belly button, and many of us have vowed never to go back. If you’re up for something risky, this detail will make a very clear reference to the runway set. Matching midriff sets are recommended (à la Isabel Marant, Versace, and Brandon Maxwell), or you can mix and match your outfit for a more casual appearance (Tom Ford).

Statement-making pantsuits

What could be superior to a pantsuit? A statement-making trouser suit. Yes, the enormous, ’80s-inspired staple of your office wardrobe is back and looking more striking than ever for the spring/summer season thanks to padded shoulders (Stella McCartney, Michael Kors), broader trouser legs, and eye-catching color schemes (Christian Siriano).

Tops with bras

The trend of wearing underwear as outerwear has reached its next stage. Is that something you’re prepared for? For the more daring fashionistas among us, going shirtless completely is a look that elevates the crop top item to a whole new level. Michael Kors suggests pairing it with high-waisted skirts, but you may also choose triangle-shaped bras to put beneath longer coats and jackets (Fendi, Tom Ford, Coach).

italic yellow

Warm, buttery yellow, a softer on-trend color to add to your wardrobe for spring/summer 2022, is perfect if you like pastel tones more than saturated, bright hues. Smoother colors are here to stay, whether it’s billowing maxis (Chloé, Proenza Schouler), coordinated crop tops (Max Mara), or sleek lightweight overcoats (Jil Sander).

Fringe

Utilize full-on fridge goodness this season to make the most of frilly skirts and dresses. For evening gatherings, choose extremely sparkly, slinky strands (Rodarte, Fendi), or choose slightly thicker fringe in muted colorways for daytime attire (Chloé, Proenza Schouler).

Bright coordinated outfits

It’s time to embrace the matchy-matchy aesthetic, which is appropriate for every occasion, including a night out and a weekend getaway in Spain. If you’re loving the latter, I’m pretty dang envious, but the runways are also favoring loose-collared shirts with matching short shorts that can be zipped up or left open to reveal a bikini top below. Get longer hemlines and figure-hugging silhouettes in trippy, psychedelic designs for a more urbane look.

Feathers

This season, Strawberry Milk feathers have appeared at several shows (David Koma, Giambattista Valli, Prabal Gurung), adding a little whimsy and pizazz to the catwalk. If you prefer small black dresses, you should know that there are occasionally black versions cameo’d (Max Mara). There were no large, yellow numbers in sight.
