What are you going to wear in 2023? While climate change may slow fashion’s quick pace, trends continue to be important in setting the tone for each new season. Following Barbiecore, Y2K, and workwear, here are the ten new fashion styles that will see you through 2023 in style.
Suits
We’ve lost count of how many times its comeback has been announced since the outbreak began, but the suit will be a staple of 2023 new fashion style. During the most recent round of fashion shows, many designers put suits back in the forefront, albeit in more relaxed versions. Far from the tight suits, we’re used to, bigger shapes will be popular next year, as seen at Acne Studios, Stella McCartney, and Dries Van Noten. The most enticing style, though, is the loose-fit jacket worn with mismatched pants or, better yet, a plain pair of pantyhose.
Wear for work
While some will wear suits, others will wear functional, utility clothing that combines elegance and comfort and is generally defined by a plethora of pockets. This new fashion style, which is halfway between gorpcore and normcore, proves that we will not abandon the casual fashions acquired during the pandemic just yet. Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton are two of the big houses that have explored this theme for the spring-summer 2023 season, with the former going for a more sophisticated look and the latter going for a more extravagant one.
Denim
Denim, which is already quite prevalent in 2022, is not going anywhere and will remain in the new fashion style next year. While denim reflected the renowned Y2K aesthetic last year, heralding the return of the low-rise waist, in particular, it will be all about the ’90s this time, with head-to-toe ensembles that are cool, loose, and laid-back. Denim will be affected by the utilitarian style, but not just, as long denim coats and classic jackets with exaggerated proportions will be seen. This was seen on the runways of Givenchy and Off-White, among other designers.
Leggings
Yikes. We realize it’s not a long-awaited comeback, but leggings will be one of the must-have items in 2023 for new fashion styles. The good news is that they will be available in more adventurous forms. Leggings will be transformed into a sophisticated fashion garment finished with transparency, sequins, and unusual prints in 2023, replacing them as an alternative to sweatpants. They’re even planning to use a flare cut, which might be very popular. This trend was seen on the Gucci and Knwls catwalks and has already been embraced by several celebrities, including Kendall Jenner.
Ballet flats
After the sneakers and hefty combat-style boots of 2022—which aren’t going away entirely—the time it’s for a more minimalist and refined shoe to take center stage. Ballet flats will hit the streets in January, following in the footsteps of the ballet core trend, which gained 220 million followers (views) on TikTok last fall for a new fashion style. Ballet flats, popularised by the fashion label Miu Miu, can be worn with or without socks and are already popular among a savvy population of influencers. Mary Janes will be popular, as will heels, which are likely to rise in price.
Neutrals and pastels
Colors will be more subdued in 2023, with a few exceptions, as normcore reigns supreme, resulting in a more basic outfit. Beige will be ubiquitous, as well as grey, white, and black, which will be wardrobe-essentials. The objective is to return to essentials, to embrace a less ephemeral and more long-lasting approach to new fashion styles. Sacai, Fendi, Tod’s, and Copernic are among the fashion brands that have designated beige as one of their preferred hues for the next season. However, cobalt blue will add a splash of color to closets as well.
Prints
Designers have given pride of place to prints of all kinds, with super bright, fun, and sometimes odd throwback designs and eccentric motifs, as though in response to this new fashion style of bland, almost drab colors, as seen at Moschino. Exotic fruits, flowers, leopard print, zebra print, and snake print are on the way, as well as geometric or abstract patterns, XXL logos, cartoons, and futuristic prints that bridge the physical and virtual worlds. There will be something to suit everyone’s tastes. On the runways of Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, and Saint Laurent, this trend was seen.
Glitter
It’s time to shine! Still swimming against the tide of the year’s two main trends, normcore, and gorpcore, some big fashion houses, and renowned designers have made dazzled and shone the extravagant elements of their new collections for new fashion styles. It can be found in silver, gold, or colored varieties, in head-to-toe ensembles, or subtle touches, illuminating our wardrobes and adding a little brightness to our life. After the general doom and gloom of 2022, this joyous atmosphere, occasionally infused with a disco motif, can only be welcomed. Glitter abounds on the runways of Valentino, 16Arlington, and Tom Ford.
Sheer
The world’s four fashion capitals—New York, London, Milan, and Paris—have made sheer, translucent products a must-have trend for 2023, turning up the heat in the new year for new fashion styles. After emphasizing cut-outs and lacing, major fashion designers are now giving a less provocative yet equally sensual look. Sheer fabrics will be visible in varying degrees on dresses, jumpsuits, slacks, and even tops, as seen at Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, Monse, Miu Miu, and Chanel. It should be noted that this sheer style will be visible in menswear, with bold, daring pieces.
Length
Following several seasons dominated by small and micro-cuts—which will not fully disappear next season—it is time to make room for more length for new fashion styles. Dresses and skirts will be a few dozen centimeters longer than the previous year, and the aesthetic will be more minimalist. They’ll be among the season’s standout items, whether satin, sheer, or enormous, as seen at Givenchy, Acne Studios, and Valentino.
